The Most Spectacularly Lamentable Trial of Miz Martha Washington by James Ijames marks the debut of Ally Theatre Company, a new organization that seeks to produce theatre designed to engage audiences through acknowledging and confronting systemic violence and oppression in America -- amplifying voices unheard and illuminating spaces unseen.
In Miz Washington, the recently widowed “Mother of America” lies helpless in her Mount Vernon bed, ravaged by illness and cared for by the very slaves that are to be free the moment she dies. The fever dream that follows investigates everything from Martha Washington’s family to her historical legacy. Director Marie Byrd Sproul, leading a cast that includes Ally company members Jane Petkofsky, Reginald Richard, Taunya Ferguson, and Ivana (Tai) Alexander, aims to examine and to deconstruct, through the theatricality, tension, satire, and even playfulness inherent in Ijames’ script, some of the myths surrounding slavery.
At Ally, we’ve taken to saying that we’re more than a theatre company; we’re a movement. In this spirit, we hope you will consider making us your year-end gift and join us in raising $17k for 2017!
